Jackson is the seat of Jackson County, a city of about 33,000 residents thirty-two miles northwest of our Tecumseh shop. It's most famous as the birthplace of the Republican Party — a meeting under the oaks on July 6, 1854 organized the party as an antislavery coalition, and "Under the Oaks" is still a city slogan. The Cascades Falls Park, a man-made illuminated waterfall built in 1932, is the city's other signature landmark.

Jackson's older neighborhoods near downtown carry a lot of late-19th-century housing stock; mid-century ranches fill the middle ring; newer subdivisions sit on the township edges. Spring Arbor University is just west of town. The Consumers Energy utility is headquartered here and provides both gas and electric service across the city.
